Dai et al. (2000) isolated the BPOZ gene from a human leukocyte cDNA library. The deduced 478-amino acid protein has a predicted molecular mass of 53.9 kD and contains an N-terminal ankyrin repeat, a bipartite nuclear localization signal, and 2 BTB/POZ domains. Semiquantitative RT-PCR detected high expression in all fetal tissues examined, including heart, brain, liver, and kidney, and low expression in adult normal and hypertrophic heart. By Northern blot analysis, Unoki and Nakamura (2001) detected an approximately 2.0-kb BPOZ transcript in all 16 adult tissues tested. Unoki and Nakamura (2001) identified 3 BPOZ transcripts generated by alternative splicing of exon 2. BPOZ2 contains 2 ankyrin repeats, BPOZ3 only 1, and BPOZ1 none. BPOZ2 and BPOZ3 have 2 complete BTB/POZ domains, whereas 1 of these 2 domains in BPOZ1 is incomplete. BPOZ2 was most predominantly expressed in peripheral blood leukocytes and endometrial cancer cell lines, followed by BPOZ3; BPOZ1 was expressed at a very low level.
