Edgar and Polak (2002) cloned mouse Abhd2, which they called Labh2. The deduced 425-amino acid protein has a central core predicted to form alpha/beta hydrolase folds and has a ser-ala-his catalytic triad characteristic of peroxidases. By database analysis, the authors identified human ABHD2, which encodes a deduced 425-amino acid protein that shares 99% amino acid identity with mouse Abhd2. Real-time PCR detected Abhd2 in all adult mouse tissues examined, with highest expression in testis. Abhd2 was also expressed at all embryonic stages examined. Using a reporter gene expression strategy, Miyata et al. (2005) found that Abhd2 was expressed in the vitelline vessels of yolk sacs at mouse embryonic day 12.5. In adult mice, Abhd2 was expressed in vascular smooth muscle cells, nonvascular smooth muscle cells, and in the heart, but not in skeletal muscle cells. It was also expressed in hepatocytes, lung alveolar type II cells, splenic reticular cells, adrenal cortex, and other tissues.
