The CASP2 gene encodes caspase-2, which belongs to a family of proteases that mediate apoptosis. CASP2 is a developmentally regulated initiator caspase that poorly cleaves other caspases but can initiate permeabilization of the outer mitochondrial membrane, and that regulates diverse stress-induced signaling pathways (summary by Carlsson et al., 2011).
