Stem cells are mother cells that have the unique ability to develop into any type of cell in the body. One of the main characteristics of stem cells is their ability to self-renew or multiply while maintaining the potential to develop into other types of cells. Stem cells can become cells of the blood, heart, bones, skin, muscles and brain, etc. There are different sources of stem cells but all types of stem cells have the same capacity to develop into multiple types of cells.
A range of receptors can be expressed on stem cells. Tie2 is expressed on fetal liver hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). KIT is a cell-surface receptor expressed on mast/stem cells and plays important roles in gametogenesis, hematopoiesis, mast cell development and function, and melanogenesis. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are adult stem cells, which reside in the bone marrow and other mesenchymal tissues. However, MSCs express a large number of cell surface receptors associated with their function, including: growth factor receptors, chemokine receptors, cytokine receptors and phenotypic receptor.
