VEGF164 / vascular endothelial growth factor A Protein Description

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was recently identified as a secreted, direct-acting mitogen specific for vascular endothelial cells and capable of stimulating angiogenesis in vivo. VEGF is a multifunctional cytokine that contributes to angiogenesis by both direct and indirect mechanisms. On the one hand, VEGF stimulates the ECs lining nearby microvessels to proliferate, migrate, and to alter their pattern of gene expression. On the other hand, VEGF renders these same microvascular ECs hyperpermeable so that they spill plasma proteins into the extravascular space, leading to the clotting of extravasated fibrinogen with deposition of a fibrin gel. Molecular cloning revealed multiple forms of VEGF, apparently arising from alternative splicing of its RNA transcript. Vascular endothelial growth factor A(VEGFA)is one member of VEGF family. VEGFA is often found as a disulfide linked homodimer. This protein is a glycosylated mitogen that specifically acts on endothelial cells and has various effects, including mediating increased vascular permeability, inducing angiogenesis, vasculogenesis and endothelial cell growth, promoting cell migration, and inhibiting apoptosis. Protein levels of vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) is elevated in Indian Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) patients.
