TNFRSF17 Protein Description

The tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor superfamily are a group of cell surface receptors critically involved in the maintenance of homeostasis of the immune system. By interacting with their corresponding ligands, these receptors either induce cell death or promote cell survival of immune cells. Human tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 17, also known as B-cell maturation protein, TNFRSF17, BCMA, and CD269, is a single-pass type I II membrane protein which contains one TNFR-Cys repeat. TNFRSF17 is a member of the TNF receptor superfamily, and is preferentially expressed in mature B lymphocytes. It binds specifically to the tumor necrosis factor (ligand) superfamily, member 13b (TNFSF13B/TALL-1/BAFF), as well as various TNFR-associated factor (TRAF) family members including TRAF1, TRAF2 and TRAF3 adaptor proteins, and thus transduces signals for cell survival and proliferation. Lacking a "death domain", overexpression of TNFRSF17 activates NF-kappa B and c-Jun N-terminal kinase. TNFRSF17 is also found in a perinulear Golgi-like structure.
