TLR2 Protein Description

TLR2, also known as CD282, belongs to the Toll-like receptor (TLR) family. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are single transmembrane cell-surface receptors, which have a key role in the innate immune system. TLRs generally exist as homodimers and are found on immune cells such as macrophages, B lymphocytes and mast cells. Toll-like receptors are activated by molecules associated with biological threat and are highly specific towards evolutionary conserved entities on microbes, such as bacterial cell-surface lipopolysaccharides, flagella and unmethylated CpG islands. TLR2 is highly expressed in peripheral blood leukocytes, in particular in monocytes, in bone marrow, lymph node and in spleen. It is also detected in lung and in fetal liver. Levels are low in other tissues. TLR2 cooperates with LY96 to mediate the innate immune response to bacterial lipoproteins and other microbial cell wall components. It also cooperates with TLR1 to mediate the innate immune response to bacterial lipoproteins or lipopeptides. TLR2 may also promote apoptosis in response to lipoproteins. CD282 recognizes mycoplasmal macrophage-activating lipopeptide-2kD, soluble tuberculosis factor, phenol-soluble modulin and B.burgdorferi outer surface protein A lipoprotein cooperatively with TLR6.
