SMYD2

SMYD2 is protein-lysine N-methyltransferase that methylates both histones and non-histone proteins. SMYD2 specifically methylates histone H3 'Lys-4' (H3K4me) and dimethylates histone H3 'Lys-36' (H3K36me2). SMYD2 has also methyltransferase activity toward non-histone proteins such as p53/TP53 and RB1. SMYD2 monomethylates 'Lys-370' of p53/TP53, leading to decreased DNA-binding activity and subsequent transcriptional regulation activity of p53/TP53. SMYD2 monomethylates 'Lys-860' of RB1/RB.

Function for SMYD2 Protein

UniProtKB:

SMYD2 is protein-lysine N-methyltransferase that methylates both histones and non-histone proteins. SMYD2 specifically methylates histone H3 'Lys-4' (H3K4me) and dimethylates histone H3 'Lys-36' (H3K36me2). SMYD2 monomethylates 'Lys-370' of p53/TP53, leading to decreased DNA-binding activity and subsequent transcriptional regulation activity of p53/TP53. SMYD2 monomethylates 'Lys-860' of RB1/RB.

Genatlas:

  • SMYD2 may be an histone tail methylase involved in chromatin structure
  • SMYD2 catalyzes lysine methylation
  • SMYD2 may function as a putative oncogene by methylating TP53 and repressing its tumor suppressive function
  • SMYD2 methylates RB1 at lysine 860 (this modification permits direct binding of RB1 to the lysine methyl-binding protein L3MBTL, which may alter the function of RB1 in cells)

Homology for human SMYD2

  • homolog to murine Smyd2 (93.5pc)
  • homolog to rattus Smyd2 (93.8pc)
  • homolog to chicken SMYD2 (86.4pc)
