Reg3a Protein Description

Regenerating islet-derived 3 alpha, also known as REG3A, hepatocarcinoma intestine pancreas (HIP), pancreatitis associated protein (PAP), is a pancreatic secretory protein that may be involved in cell proliferation or differentiation. It is a member of the regeneration (REG) family and has similarity to the C-type lectin superfamily. REG3A is mainly expressed in the intestine, with lower expression detected in healthy pancreas. It is also detected in pancreatic juice as a result of pancreatic inflammation. The enhanced expression of REG3A gene is observed during pancreatic inflammation and liver carcinogenesis. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been described for REG3A gene but the full length nature of some transcripts is not yet known. The regeneration (REG) family consists of secretory proteins involved in liver, pancreatic, gastric and intestinal cell proliferation or differentiation. Members of the REG family are divided into four subclasses, designated types I, II, III and IV. They have been implicated in the regulation of cell growth, tumorigenesis and the progression of cancer.
