MAOA / Monoamine oxidase A Protein Description
Monoamine oxidase A, also known as MAOA, is an enzyme belonging to the monoamine oxidase family. MAOA preferentially degrades amine neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin and is inhibited by clorgiline and befloxatone. This enzyme localizes to the mitochondrial outer membrane. MAOA is found bound to the outer membrane of mitochondria in most cell types in the body. Both of the two subtypes of monoamine oxidase, MAOA and MAOB are found in neurons and astroglia, with MAOA also found in the liver, gastrointestinal tract and placenta. Abnormal regulation of MAOA in the body has been associated with depression, substance abuse, attention deficit disorder, and irregular sexual maturation. Defects in MAOA are the cause of Brunner syndrome (BRUNS). Brunner syndrome is a form of X-linked non-dysmorphic mild mental retardation. Male patients are affected by a syndrome of borderline mental retardation and exhibit abnormal behavior, including disturbed regulation of impulsive aggression. Obligate female carriers have normal intelligence and behavior.
