LGALS8 / Galectin-8 Protein Description
Galectin-8, also known as Gal-8, Po66 carbohydrate-binding protein, Prostate carcinoma tumor antigen 1, PCTA-1 and LGALS8, is a member of the galectin family. Galectin-8 / LGALS8 was discovered in prostate cancer cells and has been studied extensively in the last few years. Various studies showed that galectin-8 is widely expressed in tumor tissues as well as in normal tissues. Galectins are beta-galactoside-binding animal lectins with conserved carbohydrate recognition domains. The galectins have been implicated in many essential functions including development, differentiation, cell-cell adhesion, cell-matrix interaction, growth regulation, apoptosis, and RNA splicing. Galectin-8 / LGALS8 is widely expressed in tumoral tissues and seems to be involved in integrin-like cell interactions. The level of galectin-8 expression may correlate with the malignancy of human colon cancers and the degree of differentiation of lung squamous cell carcinomas and neuro-endocrine tumors. The differences in Galectin-8 / LGALS8 expression levels between normal and tumor tissues have been used as a guide for the selection of strategies for the prevention and treatment of lung squamous cell carcinoma. Galectin-4, Galectin-8 represents a subfamily of galectins consisting of a tandem repeat of structurally different carbohydrate recognition domains within a single polypeptide chain.
