LGALS7 / Galectin-7 Protein Description

LGALS7, also known as Galectin-7, belongs to the galectins family. Galectins share similarities in the CRD (the carbohydrate recognition domain). LGALS7 belongs to the prototypical Galectins containing a single CRD, which is initially identified in human epidermis as a monomer. LGALS7 is specifically expressed in keratinocytes. It can be detected at all stages of epidermal differentiation. It is moderately repressed by retinoic acid. LGALS7 was found mainly in stratified squamous epithelium. It plays a role in cell–cell and/or cell–matrix interactions necessary for normal growth control. LGALS7 exhibits a pro-apoptotic function, as a new mitochondrial BCL2 interacting partner. It could be involved in cell-cell and/or cell-matrix interactions necessary for normal growth control. LGALS7 is a pro-apoptotic protein that functions intracellularly upstream of JNK activation and cytochrome c release.
