Influenza B/Malaysia/2506/2004(B/Malaysia/2506/04)   Background

Two types of influenza viruses are of public health concern; they are designated as Type A and Type B and can be readily distinguished from each other by laboratory tests but not by the clinical symptoms they produce. A third type of influenza virus, Type C, is of no public health significance. Influenzavirus B is a genus in the virus family Orthomyxoviridae. The only species in this genus is called "Influenza B virus". The Influenza B virus genome is 14648 nucleotides long and consists of eight segments of linear negative-sense, single-stranded RNA. Unlike influenza A viruses, these viruses are not classified according to subtype. Influenza B viruses are normally found only in humans. The only other animals known to be susceptible to influenza B infection are the seal and the ferret. Although influenza type B viruses can cause human epidemics, they have not caused pandemics. Further diminishing the impact of this virus "in man, influenza B viruses evolve slower than A viruses and faster than C viruses". Influenzavirus B mutates at a rate 2 to 3 times lower than type A.
