Influenza A/Hong kong/213/03 (A/Hong kong/213/2003) Background
Influenzavirus A is a genus of the Orthomyxoviridae family of viruses, which includes only one species: Influenza A virus which causes influenza in birds and some mammals. In humans, the need to escape preexisting immunity exerts positive selection pressure on changes in amino acids comprising the antigenic sites of the surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). There are several subtypes, labeled according to an H number (for the type of hemagglutinin) and an N number (for the type of neuraminidase). There are 16 different H antigens (H1 to H16) and nine different N antigens (N1 to N9). A bird-adapted strain of H5N1, called HPAI A(H5N1) for "highly pathogenic avian influenza virus of type A of subtype H5N1", is the causative agent of H5N1 flu, commonly known as "avian influenza" or "bird flu". Due to the high lethality and virulence of HPAI A(H5N1), its endemic presence, its increasingly large host reservoir, and its significant ongoing mutations, the H5N1 virus is the world's largest current pandemic threat and billions of dollars are being spent researching H5N1 and preparing for a potential influenza pandemic.
Sino Biological Inc offer Recombinant Hemagglutinin Protein from the A/Hong kong/213/03 (H5N1) for Influenza research.
