Galectin-8 / LGALS8 Background

Galectin-8 or LGALS8 is a secreted protein that promotes cell adhesion and migration upon binding to a subset of integrins through sugar-protein interactions. Galectin-8 or LGALS8 is a member of the galectin family whose members are associated with diverse cellular events, including immune response. Calectins are beta-galactoside-binding animal lectins with conserved carbohydrate recognition domains. Galectin-8 is an extracellular matrix protein that triggers a unique repertoire of integrin-mediated signals, which leads to a distinctive cytoskeletal organization and microspike formation. Galectin-8 was discovered in prostrate cancer cells eight years ago and has been studied extensively in the last years. Variouse studies showed that LGALS8 is widely expressed in tumor tissues as well as in normal tissues. The level of Galectin-8 expression may correlate with the malignancy of human colon cancers and the degree of differentiation of lung squamous cell carcinomas and neuro-endocrine tumors.
