GFRA3 / GFRα3 Protein Description

GDNF family receptor alpha-3, also known as GFR-alpha 3, and GFRA3, is GPI-linked cell surface receptor which belongs to the GDNFR family. GFR-alpha 3 forms a signaling receptor complex with RET tyrosine kinase receptor and binds the ligand, artemin. GFR-alpha 3 (GFRa3) is widely expressed in adult and fetus which exhibit a similar pattern. It is essentially not expressed in the central nervous system, but highly expressed in several sensory and sympathetic ganglia of the peripheral nervous system. GFR-alpha 3 (GFRa3) is moderately expressed in many non-neuronal tissues, particularly those of the digestive and urogenital systems. The GDNF family receptor alpha (GFR-alpha) proteins are extracellular cell surface bound molecules that act as adapters in binding of the GDNF family of soluble neurotrophic factors to the RET receptor. These molecules are essential for development of many neural crest derived cell types and the kidney. Members of the GFR-alpha family are also candidates for Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) mutations.
