> GAP-43 GAP-43
GAP-43 is associated with nerve growth. GAP-43 is a major component of the motile "growth cones" that form the tips of elongating axons. GAP-43 plays a role in axonal and dendritic filopodia induction.

Summaries for GAP-43
Entrez Gene summary for GAP43:
The protein encoded by this GAP43 gene has been termed a 'growth' or 'plasticity' protein because it is expressed at high levels in neuronal growth cones during development and axonal regeneration. GAP-43 is considered a crucial component of an effective regenerative response in the nervous system. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
Wikipedia summary for GAP-43:
Growth Associated Protein 43 also known as GAP-43 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the GAP43 gene. GAP-43 has been termed a 'growth' or 'plasticity' protein because it is expressed at high levels in neuronal growth cones during development, during axonal regeneration and is phosphorylated after long-term potentiation (LTP) and after learning. GAP-43 is considered a crucial component of the axon and presynaptic terminal, its null mutation leading to death within days after birth due to axon pathfinding defects.
Human GAP-43 Protein General Information
| Protein names |
Growth-associated protein 43 |
| Sequence length |
238 AA. |
| Sequence similarities: |
GAP-43 belongs to the neuromodulin family. GAP-43 contains 1 IQ domain. |
| Post-translational modification: |
Phosphorylated at Ser-41 by PHK. Phosphorylation of this protein by a protein kinase C is specifically correlated with certain forms of synaptic plasticity. |
| Subunit structure |
GAP-43 is identified in a complex containing FGFR4, NCAM1, CDH2, PLCG1, FRS2, SRC, SHC1, GAP43 and CTTN. GAP-43 binds calmodulin with a greater affinity in the absence of Ca2+ than in its presence |
