> FABP5 (E-FABP) FABP5 (E-FABP)
FABP5 is high specificity for fatty acids. Highest affinity for C18 chain length. FABP5 decreases the chain length or introducing double bonds reduces the affinity. FABP5 may be involved in keratinocyte differentiation.

Summaries for FABP5 (E-FABP)
Entrez Gene summary for FABP5:
This FABP5 gene encodes the fatty acid binding protein found in epidermal cells, and was first identified as being upregulated in psoriasis tissue. Fatty acid binding proteins are a family of small, highly conserved, cytoplasmic proteins that bind long-chain fatty acids and other hydrophobic ligands. FABPs may play roles in fatty acid uptake, transport, and metabolism. Polymorphisms in this gene are associated with type 2 diabetes. The human genome contains many pseudogenes similar to this locus.[provided by RefSeq, Feb 2011]
OMIM - description for FABP5:
Fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs) bind free fatty acids and regulate lipid metabolism and transport. See also FABP3 (134651).
Wikipedia summary for FABP5:
Fatty acid-binding protein, epidermal is a protein that in humans is encoded by the FABP5 gene.

Function for FABP5 (E-FABP) Protein
UniProtKB:
FABP5 is high specificity for fatty acids. Highest affinity for C18 chain length. FABP5 decreases the chain length or introducing double bonds reduces the affinity. FABP5 may be involved in keratinocyte differentiation.
Genatlas:
- FABP5 may be involved in keratinocyte differentiation
- FABP5 transports endocannabinoid anandalide arichidonoyl ethanolamide from the plasma membrane to subcellular fatty acid amide hydrolase, which hydrolyzes and inactivates it (Kaczocha 2009)
