Endothelium & Endothelial Cell Background

The endothelium is the thin layer of cells that line the interior surface of blood vessels, forming an interface between circulating blood in the lumen and the rest of the vessel wall. These cells are called endothelial cells. Endothelial cells line the entire circulatory system, from the heart to the smallest capillary. Endothelial cells are involved in many aspects of vascular biology, including: atherosclerosis, angiogenesis, inflammation, blood clotting, etc. Endothelial dysfunction is a hallmark for cardiovascular diseases, such as thromboembolism, hypertension, coronary artery disease, and hypercholesterolemia. Endothelial dysfunction is often regarded as a key early event in the development of atherosclerosis. Since the endothelium is a key barrier separating body fluids from host tissues and is a major target of pathogenic bacteria, endothelial cells are actively involved in host responses to infectious agents, producing inflammatory cytokines, controlling coagulation cascades and regulating leukocyte trafficking.
