Summaries for Elafin (PI3, WFDC14)
Entrez Gene summary for Elafin (PI3, WFDC14):
PI3 gene encodes an elastase-specific inhibitor that functions as an antimicrobial peptide against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The protein contains a WAP-type four-disulfide core (WFDC) domain, and is thus a member of the WFDC domain family. Most WFDC gene members are localized to chromosome 20q12-q13 in two clusters: centromeric and telomeric. PI3 gene belongs to the centromeric cluster. Expression of PI3 gene is upgulated by bacterial lipopolysaccharides and cytokines. [provided by RefSeq, Oct 2008]
OMIM - description for Elafin (PI3, WFDC14):
PI3 is a serine protease inhibitor that plays a major role as an antiinflammatory mediator at mucosal surfaces. In addition, PI3 has antibacterial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial and fungal pathogens (summary by Ghosh et al., 2009).
Wikipedia summary for Elafin (PI3, WFDC14):
Elafin, also known as peptidase inhibitor 3 or skin-derived antileukoprotease (SKALP), is a protein that in humans is encoded by the PI3 gene.
