Neuralin-1 / CHRDL1 Protein Description
Chordin-like protein 1, also known as Neuralin-1, Ventroptin, NRLN1, and CHRDL1, is a secreted protein which contains three VWFC domains. CHRDL1 is an antagonist of bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP-4) which antagonizes the function of BMP4 by binding to it and preventing its interaction with receptors. It is mainly expressed in the ventral retina, not only with a ventral high-dorsal low gradient but also with a nasal high-temporal low gradient at later stages. Misexpression of CHRDL1 altered expression patterns of several topographic genes in the retina and projection of the retinal axons to the tectum along both axes. CHRDL1 alters the fate commitment of neural stem cells from gliogenesis to neurogenesis. It contributes to neuronal differentiation of neural stem cells in the brain by preventing the adoption of a glial fate. CHRDL1 may play a crucial role in dorsoventral axis formation. It may play a role in embyonic bone formation. CHRDL1 may also play an important role in regulating retinal angiogenesis trough modulation of BMP4 actions in endothelial cells.
