CNTN3 / Contactin-3 Protein Description
The brain-derived axon-associated cell adhesion molecule BIG-1, also known as CNTN3 or PANG (plasmacytoma-associated neuronal glycoprotein) ,belongs to the contactin family consisting of six members (CNTN1/F3, CNTN2/TAG-1, CNTN3/BIG-1, CNTN4/BIG-2, CNTN5/NB-2 and CNTN6/NB-3). CNTN3 is a member of the immunoglobulin (Ig)superfamily with six Ig-like domains, four fibronectin type I II-like repeats, and a GPI-anchoring domain. The expression pattern of CNTN3 is developmentally regulated with the highest level in the adult brain , and restricted to subsets of neurons such as Purkinje cells of the cerebellum, granule cells of the dentate gyrus, and neurons in the superficial layers of the cerebral cortex. It has been suggested that BIG-1 has a neurite outgrowth-promoting activity ,and play an important role in the formation and maintenance of specific neuronal networks in the brain together with other contactin members.
