Chitinase 3-like 1 (CHI3L1), also named Cartilage glycoprotein-39 (gp-39), is a secretory glycoprotein and member of the chitinase protein family. It is associated with late stages of monocyte to macrophage maturation. Human cartilage glycoprotein 39 (HC-gp39) is a 39-kDa glycoprotein secreted by articular chondrocytes, synoviocytes and macrophages. Increased levels of HC-gp39 (CHI3L1) have been demonstrated in synovial fluids of patients with rheumatoid or osteoarthritis. It is differentially expressed at the site of chronic inflammation. CHI3L1 is one of the putative autoantigens in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It is considered as a target of the immune response in RA. Besides, chinase 3-like 1 (CHI3L1) is an inducible molecule overexpressed in colonic epithelial cells (CECs) under inflammatory conditions.
