CDK1 / CDC2 Protein Description

Cell division control protein 2 homolog, also known as p34 protein kinase, Cyclin-dependent kinase 1, CDK1 and CDC2, is a nucleus protein which belongs to the protein kinase superfamily, CMGC Ser/Thr protein kinase family. CDC2 / CDKX subfamily. CDK1 / CDC2 contains one protein kinase domain. CDK1 / CDC2 forms a stable but non-covalent complex with a regulatory subunit and with a cyclin. CDK1 / CDC2 interacts with DLGAP5. Isoform 2 of CDK1 / CDC2 is unable to complex with cyclin B1 and also fails to bind to the CDK inhibitor p21. CDK1 / CDC2 interacts with catalytically active CCNB1 and RALBP1 during mitosis to form an endocytotic complex during interphase. CDK1 / CDC2 plays a key role in the control of the eukaryotic cell cycle. It is required in higher cells for entry into S-phase and mitosis. p34 is a component of the kinase complex that phosphorylates the repetitive C-terminus of RNA polymerase II. Expression level of CDK1 increased along with the malignant progression of ganglioglioma, and decreased with the differentiation process of neural stem cells. Expression of CDK1 was high in human fetal brain tissues and bone marrows of nude mice, but low in normal adult human brain tissues. Overexpression of CDK1 may promote oncogenesis and progression of human gliomas. Downregulation of CDK1 expression can inhibit the proliferation activities of human malignant gliomas.
