CD7 Protein Description
T-cell antigen CD7, also known as T-cell surface antigen Leu-9, and CD7, is a single-pass type I membrane protein. It is expressed on human T and NK cells, as well as on cells in the early stages of T, B, and myeloid cell differentiation. CD7 is a T cell-associated antigen which appears early in ontogeny and persists on circulating T cells. It appears to have a significant role in T cell development and function. The precise mechanism by which this molecule mediates its effect is not known. CD7-mediated signals appear to augment function of adhesion molecules on NK cells, which may be involved in NK cell activation by providing both anchorage and costimulatory triggering. The CD7 molecule is a differentiation antigen found on the surface of T lymphocytes and also on a very minor fraction of acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL). CD7 is highly expressed on malignant immature T cells and is generally absent on malignant mature T cells, such as CD4+ Sezary leukemia and HTLV-1+ adult T-cell leukemia cells. Studies in CD7-deficient mice have provided insights into CD7 function, and demonstrated key roles for CD7 in regulating peripheral T and NK cell cytokine production and sensitivity to LPS-induced shock syndromes.
