CD164 / Endolyn Protein Description
Sialomucin core protein 24, also known as Endolyn, Multi-glycosylated core protein 24, MGC-24 and CD164, is a single-pass type I membrane and secreted protein which belongs to the CD164 family. Sialomucins are a heterogeneous group of secreted or membrane-associated mucins that appear to play two key but opposing roles: first as cytoprotective or antiadhesive agents, and second as adhesion receptors. CD164 is a sialomucin that may play a key role in hematopoiesis by facilitating the adhesion of CD34+ cells to the stroma and by negatively regulating CD34+CD38 (lo/-) cell proliferation. CD164 functions as an adhesion receptor. It is known to function as a receptor that regulates stem cell localization to the bone marrow. CD164 modulates the migration of umbilical cord blood CD133+ cells and this is mediated through the CXCL12/CXCR4 axis. CD164 promotes myogenesis by enhancing CXCR4-dependent cell motility. It positively regulates myoblast migration and promotes myoblast fusion into myotubes. CD164 may participate in the localization of prostate cancer cells to the marrow CD164 may play an important role in prostate cancer metastasis and the infiltration of bone marrow by cancer cell.
