ANGPTL5 Protein Description
Angiopoietin-related protein 5, also known as, Angiopoietin-like 5 and ANGPTL5, is a member of the Angiopoietin family. Angiopoietin family consists of ANGPT1, ANGPT2, ANGPT4, ANGPTL1 (ANGPT3), ANGPTL2, ANGPTL3 (ANGPT5), ANGPTL4, ANGPTL5, ANGPTL6 and ANGPTL7. They are secreted proteins possessing an amino-terminal coiled-coil domain and a carboxyl-terminal fibrinogen-like domain and are known as angiogenic factors. They act as growth factors that promote angiogenesis, the formation of blood vessels from pre-existing blood vessels. Like other members of the angiopoietin family, ANGPTL5 protein also has an N-terminal cleavable signal peptide, a predicted coiled-coil domain, and a fibrinogen-like domain. ANGPTL5 is mainly expressed in adult human heart. Loss of function mutations of ANGPTL3, ANGPTL4, and ANGPTL5 are associated with a low triglyceride concentration. They are regulators of lipoprotein metabolism in humans. Inhibition of these ANGPTLs will be useful for dyslipidemia to prevent cardiovascular disease.
