ALDH7A1 Antibody Background
Aldehyde dehydrogenase 7 family member A1 also known as ALDH7A1 and antiquitin, is an enzyme which is a member of subfamily 7 in the aldehyde dehydrogenase family. The aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) superfamily represents a divergently related group of enzymes that metabolize a wide variety of endogenous and exogenous aldehydes. Aldehyde dehydrogenase is the second enzyme of the major oxidative pathway of alcohol metabolism. Two major liver isoforms of this enzyme, cytosolic and mitochondrial, can be distinguished by their electrophoretic mobilities, kinetic properties, and subcellular localizations. These enzymes are thought to play a major role in the detoxification of aldehydes generated by alcohol metabolism and lipid peroxidation. ALDH7A1 functions as an aldehyde dehydrogenase in the pipecolic acid pathway of lysine catabolism. Mutations in ALDH7A1 cause pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy, which involves a combination of various seizure types and is responsive to immediate administration of pyridoxine hydrochloride.
